Vernon Louis McCollam, 83, of Independence died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in Independence.
He was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Kincaid, to L.M. “Jack” and Lucy Ruth (Reynolds) McCollam. He grew up in the Kincaid area and graduated from Kincaid High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 24 years retiring in 1969 as a Chief Petty Officer. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
In August 1947 he married Lois McAtee. They had one child, Verna (McCollam) Turner. They were divorced.
He then married Doris Degarimore in 1957. They had five children, Greg of Independence, Pat, Greenwood, Ind., Donald, of the home, Diana Poliquin, Leavenworth, and Lori Houghton, Coffeyville.
Other survivors include his wife of the home; a brother, Jim, Kincaid; three sisters, Rosemary Gillaspie and Kathleen McCollam, Kincaid, and Dolores Butler, Waynesville, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday in Independence. Military services followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.
