Wilda May Schornick (nee Johnson) passed away on Friday, Dec. 1,  2017, of heart failure at her home in Yates Center. She was born in Reading, the daughter of John M. Johnson and Marguerite Gray Johnson on Sept. 10, 1921. She graduated from Kansas State Teachers’ College in 1942 with a teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Little River and Great Bend, before marrying Willie “Bill” Schornick of Yates Center on Sept. 22, 1946.

Together they raised their three children, Kent, Lynn and Roxanne. She began substitute teaching in Yates Center public schools and became a full-time employee, substituting and working as a library assistant.

Wilda was a member of United Methodist Church in Yates Center, a lifetime member of the Goldenrod Chapter of Eastern Star and a 50-plus year member of the Yates Center Chapter of P.EO.

Wilda was predeceased by her husband Bill, son Kent, brothers Glen and William, sisters Neola, Wanda and Bernice, great-granddaughter Danika and great-grandson Paul. She is survived by her daughter Roxanne and Joe (Gregg), Yates Center; son Lynn Schornick, Chicago; daughter-in-law Dolores Schornick, Topeka; grandchildren Clinton Gregg, Olathe, Tonya Frederick, Chanute, Terra Petit, Yates Center, Seth Schornick, Sherman Oaks, Calif., Eryn Schornick, Washington, D.C., and Christopher Schornick, Emporia; great-grandchildren Ashley and Alex Gregg, Olathe, Kyndal, Brayden and Kaidan Frederick, Chanute, Logan Tidd, Rocky, Kaden and Brody Petit, Yates Center, and Kent Schomick, Tehachapi, Calif.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A private memorial service is planned near Christmas when most of the family has gathered for the holiday. Her gravestone rests in the Yates Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Yates Center Chapter of P.E.O. which is a philanthropic and educational organization interested in bringing to women increased educational opportunities for higher education.
