Iola moved a step closer Tuesday to a comprehensive recreation program with a full-time director. City commissioners and a handful of proponents listened for an hour while Steve Friend, Burlington recreation director, and Ron Maring, who directs recreation in Osawatomie, talked about their programs and answered questions. A surprisingly severe storm, packing winds of 60 mph and heavy rain, darted into Iola Wednesday afternoon. Trees fell into the 69,000-volt KGE transmission lines cutting off power citywide for almost four hours. Classrooms on the second floor of Jefferson Elementary School were also damaged.
