Whether young, old, or any age in between, two things never end the need for friends and the desire to learn. Humanity House strives to meet both of those needs through our series of classes.
Loneliness is not restricted to those in poverty.
Children can be loners. Sometimes its because they are socially awkward and have a hard time making friends. Sometimes it is because they are bullied and set apart by the crowd.
Young people who are working and raising families often dont make the time for themselves to step away from family life and make friends or feed the friendships that they already have. For many, once a babysitter is paid, the added expense of going out becomes unaffordable.
Lots of middle aged folks find that it is way easier to let friendships become acquaintances and cozy down in front of the television after a long day at work.
The elderly sometimes feel that there is nothing new in this world for them, that each day is just going to be the same until there are no more. Spouses have died; friends have died, and so the need to make new friends is real but may not seem possible.
A lack of access to transportation can also isolate people. Children cant drive themselves. Young people might not have cars or their shared car might be unavailable in the evening. Middle aged folks may need to budget their gas so they can make it to work every day until payday. And sometimes elderly folks dont like to get out alone at night or drive at night.
For others, depression, anxiety, or mental health makes it very difficult to leave home and make friends.
These are some of the reasons why Humanity House classes are important. Taking a risk and coming to a class where you may not know anyone, sitting beside someone whose life circumstances you dont know, and finding out that you have many things in common is wonderful at any age. When friendships are formed plans can be made. Sharing a meal in exchange for a sharing a ride to a Humanity House class can turn into a real and lasting friendship. Barriers are broken down between religion, race, tax brackets, and gender.
All Humanity House classes are free and open to everyone. There is no cost to attend, so that barrier to entry is gone.
But to keep offering consistent programming, we need teachers. Teachers volunteer their time in exchange for much appreciation and a rewarding experience. If you have a skill that you would love to bring to others and to make new friends, give us a call. If you would love to play dominoes, cards, or board games, let us know so we can organize a weekly game night. If you want to teach guitar, voice, budgeting, checkbook balancing, sewing, knitting, crochet, painting, photography, drawing, birdhouse building, or any other thing that you know how to do, reach out to us. We guarantee there are others who want to learn that.
Community is about friendships. Lets make new friends and have some fun.
Kindness matters!
