[Readers’ forum] I’ll vote for Otto

Bill Otto needs your vote on Aug. 3. Bill Otto isn’t owned by anybody except the people he represents as God gives him the wisdom. When Bill was first elected he told us what he would do and did it. Over the years Bill has come back regularly and stayed in contact with the folks and listened to their voice. He has consistently kept us inform-ed on his positions. He was there in Iola after the flood of 2007 on his hands and knees cleaning houses and making himself available to anybody who needed help with their claims.
When Bill voted on legislation in this last session of the legislature he was listening to his constituents. People wanted him to fund education and make sure the schools received the money they needed to operate. I attended a lot of meetings on the local level as well as listening sessions where Bill came to hear what the folk wanted. I heard some of the consistent things that Bill heard and one of those things was the willingness to pay a sales tax if necessary.
Anyone who says Bill Otto voted with the liberals is intentionally not telling the truth. If he voted with the liberals they would love his pro-life position. If he voted with the liberals they would love his pro-Bill of Rights (second amendment) position. If he voted with the liberals they would love his ideas for cutting unnecessary construction at the Kansas Capitol or cutting legislative pay.
But they don’t love him.
If the truth be known the one(s) who have embarrassed the state is the leadership of both parties. This funding battle in the Legislature is pathetic and has to change. In the last 10 years we’ve seen this thing escalate into a political soap opera dragging out the funding to the point, this year, school districts, adminstrators, teachers, and staff were left to wonder when they could plan on contracts for the next year as late as the end of May. It should’ve been known in March!
As one of Bill’s critics so eloquently pointed out in the forum, Bill isn’t in leadership. If he was you could blame him, right? But he isn’t, so you can’t. The reason Bill isn’t in leadership is because he isn’t playing lap dog to the party bosses on either side.

So, my fellow constituents, if you want someone who is lusting for poltical leadership and a prime candidate to be a lap dog, vote for somebody else. But if you want someone who is going to listen to you and represent you and not his personal vanity, vote for Bill Otto. I did!

Respectfully,
Bill LaPorte,
Moran, Kan.
