ACC volleyball struggles in loss

Allen Community College lost in straight sets to Coffeyville, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-20, Wednesday night.
“This has been such an extreme difference in seasons,” coach Jessica Peters said. “We have gone from one end that you can go to the completely other. But, in reverse order. If were to do what we have done now — which is this major losing streak — I would have personally preferred it early on in the season.”
The team is 2-7 in its last regular season matches. The Red Devils went 23-15 last season on their way to the Region VI tournament. This season, Allen is 9-17 overall and 1-6 in Jayhawk Conference East play.
“I think the frustration is that we continue to practice what we think our weaknesses are early day in and day out,” Peters said. “But, they are still not executed.”
The Ravens controlled the first set, leading from start to finish. Allen got no closer than Coffeyville’s 5-1 lead to start the match.
The second set was much more competitive. After trailing 11-3 early, the Red Devils fought back to a 14-14 tie. Allen took the lead  at 18-17, but scored only three points after that as Coffeyville took control.
Allen played another hard fought set, but again fell short in the finale. After Allen forged in front, 11-9, Coffeyville took back the lead. The score was tied at 13-13 when Coffeyville finished on an upswing.
“We played point-for-point. Granted, Coffeyville did their fair share of errors in addition to ours,” Peters said. “Had we minimized ours and allowed Coffeyville to continue to make theirs, then I really feel like that would have been good for the win that we needed.”
Allen travels to Lee’s Summit, Mo., Monday to square off with Longview Community College at 6 p.m.
“I just want to gain something from every match we have left,” Peters said. “If we have four matches left, win or lose, I want to feel like we’re taking steps in the right direction. We didn’t see that tonight.”
