Red Devils lose to third-ranked Johnson County Monday

OTTAWA — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil volleyball team did something it hadn’t done all season. They played a team to five sets and won, not once but twice Saturday.
The Red Devils defeated host Ottawa University’s junior varsity 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 15-8 and posted a 16-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-12 win over Friends University’s junior varsity.
“This was a huge step forward for this team,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach.
Allen County climbed to 14-11 on the season. They played at Johnson County Monday night, taking a 2-4 Jayhawk Conference record into the match.
Johnson County, which is third ranked in NJCAA Division II volleyball, wasn’t a very good host as the Lady Cavaliers defeated the Red Devils 25-8, 25-21, 25-11 Monday in Overland Park.
“There are certain teams you can afford to make a mistake against but versus a team like Johnson they do not need us to give them points on top of what they already earned,” Peters said.
“Johnson has heavy hitters as do we but a block by us on them was just one block. A block from them on us was a shutdown.”
Nicole Rockhold put down 14 kills against Johnson County. Allison Jenicke had five kills. Allen County only had 21 kills on the night. Jenicke had the lone service ace for the Red Devils.
Nicole Reed came up with 19 digs. Jenicke had seven digs while Rockhold and Erika Mack each had six digs. Mack had 11 set assists.
Andrea Miller had a solo block at the net. Jenicke and Leesha Plagens had a block assist apiece.
