ACCC, NCCC split a pair

Opening Jayhawk Eastern Division play at home, Allen County Community College’s baseball team won in extra innings.
Then the Red Devils were shut out.
The Red Devils rallied to beat visiting Neosho County Community College’s Panthers 8-7 in eight innings Sunday. They trailed 6-0 after 5 1/2 innings.
Allen County got a solo home run from Nick Fountain and a three-run home run from Garret Hess in a four-run sixth. Brad Alberts and Bryce Williams had RBI singles in the seventh to tie the game at 6-6.
Neosho County scored a run in the top of the eighth inning. With one gone in the bottom half of the inning, Brayden Brumley drew a walk followed by a single by Riley Price. Fountain’s sacrifice fly drove in the tying run. Curtiss Bunch doubled to deep right center field to drive in the winning run.
Zak Mickens got the pitching win in relief of ACCC starter Cody Wren. Wren worked five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks and two hit batters. He struck out seven. Mickens threw three innings, giving up two runs on three hits and struck out two.
Brumley, Albers and Michael Schell each had two singles. Williams had a single and a double. Bunch doubled while Price and Kyle Johnston each singled.
In the second game, Allen County was held to two hits — singles by Price and Hess. The Panthers won 9-0.
Brandon Spear took the pitching loss. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits, one walk and one hit batter. He struck out one. Travis Stafford worked 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing three runs on six hits, two walks and a hit batter. He had three strikeouts.
The two teams have another doubleheader today at 3 o’clock.
