Allen men roll over Red Ravens

COFFEYVILLE — One year after struggling through one of the roughest years in school history — winning only six of 37 games — Allen Community College’s men showed once again Wednesday just how different life is this season.
The Red Devils opened conference action Wednesday by knocking off host Coffeyville, 79-75. Coffeyville had entered the game having won six in a row by an average of more than 40 points per game.
“It was a big team effort, and everyone contributed in the victory in some way,” Allen head coach Andy Shaw said.
The Red Devils took control early in the second half, turning a 45-44 deficit into a 66-53 lead.
“But Coffeyville would not go away,” Shaw said.
The Red Ravens cut the deficit to two late in the game before Allen hit some timely baskets.
Red Devil sophomore Cody Sluder drained a pair of critical free throws in the final minute to extend ACC’s lead to four “and ultimately sealed the game in our favor,” Shaw said.
Coffeyville started out on a high note, racing to an early 8-2 lead before the Red Devils settled down and took better care of the ball, Shaw noted.
Allen never let Coffeyville push its lead into double digits. Raheem Tyner’s layup at the end of the first half cut the Red Ravens’ lead to 45-44.
Tyner narrowly missed his third straight double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Courtney Stockard also scored 15 with two steals. Alex Miller followed with 13, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, to go with two steals. Alex Keiswetter pulled down six rebounds. Ben Uno dished out three assists.
Montel James scored 24 to lead Coffeyville. Mike Martin scored 13.
Allen shot 9 of 19 from 3 and hit 50 percent from the field. The Red Devils also controlled a 38 to 31 rebounding advantage.
Allen (12-6 overall and 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division play) returns home Saturday to host Coweley. Tipoff is at about 4 p.m.
