FREDONIA — With just a few meets left until the postseason, multiple athletes made progress on their distances and times while medaling at Thursday’s Fredonia Relays.
Iola High School finished the highest among area teams with the boys taking fifth and the girls taking ninth. Athletes from the surrounding area more than held their own against tough competition from more than 18 competing schools.
Iola juniors Austin Crooks and Keegan Hill each came away with gold medals. Crooks took first in the triple jump with a 43’-9’’ jump while Hill took first with a blistering 4:38 in the 1600. He also took first in the half-mile with a 2:03 run. Senior Riley Maddox took fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a 17.5 second run. Sophomore Kevon Loving took fifth in the long jump with a 19’ 1” leap.
In girls action, senior Bethany Miller took second in the discus. Senior distance runner Ari Ramirez took fifth in the 1600 in 6 minutes, 30 seconds.
The Humboldt Cubs took 14th as a team while the Lady Cubs also took 14th.
Humboldt also had some top-five medalists. Junior Jean Yumba took first in the shotput with a 33’ 11’’ throw. Freshman Aspen Wimsett took fourth in the 3200 with a 14:27 run.
For the boys, senior Carson Peters took third in the discus and junior Thatcher Mueller took sixth in the high jump after clearing 5’ 8”.
Crest junior Xander Fuller took third in the long jump with a 19’ 3” leap. Yates Center junior Jayda Rice took third in the shot put with a 33’ 2” throw and Yates Center’s Marcus Cummings took third in the 110-meter high hurdles.
