CANEY — Yates Center High’s Wildcats rallied and put themselves in position to win a road game in the Tri-Valley League Friday.
But Caney Valley High’s Bullpups had other ideas. The Bullpups re-gained the lead and held off the Cubs for a 44-41 win.
“Against their press and zone defenses, we didn’t do a good enough job finding the open man,” said Jason Weilert, Wildcat head coach.
“The kids played hard and came back from an 11-point deficit. We had opportunities late and didn’t get the shots off.”
The game was close throughout the first half. Caney Valley moved to a 19-17 halftime lead. The Bullpups outscored the Cubs 17-8 in the third quarter.
Yates Center worked back from a 36-25 deficit to get a two-point lead with over a minute to play.
“They got three offensive rebounds and tied the game. We didn’t take care of the ball at the end. In tight games, you have to take care of the ball and create opportunities for shots,” Weilert said.
The Wildcats dropped to 5-2 in TVL play and 8-6 overall. Yates Center goes to Cherryvale Tuesday.
Paul Stockebrand scored 14 points and Dalton Smith had 12 points.
Gable LaForge tossed in 18 points for Caney Valley. Matt Barlow scored 10.
Yates Center lost the junior varsity game 55-23. Brent Rice scored 10 and Sam Aguirre added nine for the Wildcats.
