HUMBOLDT — Even with a few hiccups along the way, Humboldt High’s Cubs returned to action on a high note Tuesday, fending off visiting Fredonia, 60-56.

“We started out playing well,” Cub head coach David Taylor said, particularly inside with Trey Sommer leading the way.

Sommer scored a season-high 18 points, and pulled in 14 rebounds.

“He did a great job inside,” Taylor said. “He was very active.”

Humboldt held a small lead throughout, but it was close.

The Cubs led 10-9 after one and 27-25 at the break before pushing its margin to eight, 47-39, after three.

“We had some foul trouble that hurt us in the first half,” Taylor said. “And there are times when we’re our own worst enemy.”

A few turnovers and bad shots allowed Fredonia to claw back into the contest down the stretch.

“I think we played as if we were down by eight and not up by eight,” Taylor said, lamenting Humboldt’s shot selection when playing with a lead.

“But I’m not displeased,” he quickly added. “It was a good win.”

Drew Wilhite followed with 14 points, three assists, three steals and two blocks, while Drake Harrington scored 11. Colton Slocum gave Humboldt a lift off the bench with six points. Gavin Page had three assists and three steals.
