On the ping of the bat — Bretton Ater of Allen County Community College makes contact for a single in Thursday’s second game against visiting Highland Community College. The Red Devils swept the Jayhawk East twin bill 6-5 and 14-1.

Thursday was a great day to be at the ballpark.
Allen County Community College’s Red Devils took full advantage of a sun-drenched, warm March afternoon. They sent visiting Highland Community College’s Scotties packing.
The Red Devils pulled out a 6-5 win in the first game. Then they cruised to a 14-1 run-rule win in the second contest.
Racking up two wins over the Scotties pushed Allen County to 3-3 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play and 9-7 overall. Highland is 2-4 and 4-9.
Allen County travels to Johnson County (3-1, 12-7) for a doubleheader Saturday.
The opener wasn’t easy to win. Allen County trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the third inning.
In that inning, Brayden Brumley singled to lead off then scored on a double by Bretton Ater. Ater crossed the plated on a one-out single by Connor McCrite. McCrite stole second and scored on a base hit by Michael Schell.
Allen County broke the 4-4 tie with two runs in the fourth. Wyatt Hall drew a one-out walk, swiped second  then Brumley had an infield single. Ater drove in a run with a base hit. Marcus Peavler’s sacrifice fly chased home the other run.
Highland scored a run in the sixth to tighten things up, 6-5. Aaron Burke came on in relief of Ben Pearson in the sixth with two on and no outs. Burke struck out Highland’s Phil Kafka to end the threat.
Mark Thompson, who got the win, started on the mound for ACCC. He pitched five innings, allowed four runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Pearson came in to pitch in the sixth and was charged with one run on two walks.
Burke stayed out to pitch the seventh inning as the Red Devils protected a one-run lead. He gave up a double then retired the next three batters to end the game and earn a save.
Schell and Brumley each had two singles. Ater singled and a doubled. McCrite had a single.
David Ormiston was on the mound for ACCC in the second game. After giving up a run in the first inning on a walk, a balk and two hits and issuing a walk and hitting a batter in the second, Ormiston settled down.
The tide turned for the sophomore right-hander when he struck out Highland catcher Austin Ascherl on a called strike. Ormiston struck out the next batter and got a ground-out.
Ormiston gave up just two more hits and two more walks over the next four innings. He allowed the one run and had four strikeouts.
Cody Wren pitched a one-hit seventh inning. Wren recorded two strikeouts.
In Jayhawk Conference play, teams play one seven-inning game and one nine-inning game. Allen County run-ruled Highland 14-1 in seven innings in the second contest.
Allen County battered Highland pitching for 16 hits. The Red Devils scored three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third for a 6-1 lead.
The Red Devils added two more runs in the fifth and six in the sixth for the final margin.
Ryan Fike was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single with two RBIs. Brumley drove in four runs and had a single and a double. Ater was 3-for-4 with three singles.
McCrite hit two singles and drove in three runs. Schell had a single and a double. Hitting a single each were Miles Sanderson, Stefaan Jefferson, Riley Price and Curtis Bunch.
