An eight-game losing streak went up in numerous puffs of dirt Tuesday night as the Iola softball team took out some frustration on host Parsons.

The Fillies swept the Lady Vikings, 17-0 and 19-0, and moved to 3-9 overall.

“We’re very pleased all of the ways around with everything,” Weide said. “We started two freshman pitchers tonight and they didn’t give up more than one or two hits a game. Defensively we may have only had just one error in the combined two games and offensively that’s best we’ve hit since I’ve been here. We scored 35 runs. It was by far the most aggressive we’ve been. They swung at good pitches.”

Game 1

The Fillies opened things up with five runs in the top of the first followed by eight more in the top of the second. Iola scored four more in the top of the third to push its lead to 17 and with another scoreless inning from Parsons, the game was over.

Kailey Schinstock no-hit the Fillies through the three innings allowing just a walk and striking out four.

Sadrie Overall had three hits and four RBIs and Nissa Fountain drove in three on two hits.

“Everybody knows we’ve struggled the last eight games so it didn’t matter who we were playing, we were looking for wins,” Weide said. “We wanted the girls to come into today with the right mindset and it was good to see us finally commit to that.”

Game 2

It was a much slower start for the Fillies in the second game. Iola scored two in the top of the first, nothing in the second and then 11 runs in the top of the third to take a 13-0 lead. Iola scored five more to finish the game off.

Jenna Miller earned her first varsity start, allowing just one hit while striking out five.

“They’ve definitely brought some energy that we were lacking early in the season,” Weide said of the players like Miller who’ve come up through junior varsity. “Each and every one of them that has stepped up from JV has meshed together really well with the other varsity girls. They’re definitely earning some playing time and showing some positive things.”

Overall had two hits and three RBIs in the game but the lion’s share of the Fillies’ runs were all on walks or errors.

Iola will return home on Thursday for the first time in a while and will face Neodesha, a team Weide says reminds him of his own.

“They’re kind of like us where they have some young girls stepping up for them,” Weide said. “In the past, they’ve struggled against us but we’ll really need to play well if we want to keep winning. There will be no gimmies on Thursday.”
