HUMBOLDT — The first-shot defense by Humboldt High’s girls went largely according to plan.
“It was the second-chance points that killed us,” Lady Cub interim coach Craig Smith said Friday, after visiting Fredonia High blasted its way to a 66-14 win.
“We do a good job of guarding the ball, but they caught us standing around when it came to getting rebounds,” said Smith, who will coach for the remainder of the season. Head coach Jeff Wilkerson is taking a medical leave of absence.
Fredonia led 22-4 after one period and 38-9 at the break. The lead stood at 62-11 after three quarters.
“I was pleased with how the girls came out after halftime,” Smith said. “They played hard.”
Morgan Morris scored five points with two assists to lead Humboldt. Sheri Middleton had seven rebounds. Haley Riebel had two steals.
Shannon Tindle’s 13 points led the Yellowjackets.
Humboldt plays at Neodesha Tuesday.
