BURLINGTON — There are some things which cannot be coached — height and speed are two of those.
Iola High’s Fillies have speed on their team but height won out for Topeka Hayden High’s Wildcats in the opening round of the 2011 Burlington High Invitational.
Hayden’s starting lineup had just one girl under 5-10 while Iola has just one girl taller than 5-8.
Hayden’s inside play at both ends of the court stymied Iola’s game. The Wildcats powered their way to a 47-19 win after holding the Fillies to seven first-half points.
The Fillies dropped to 5-4 on
the season and into the consolation side of the tournament bracket. They play Rossville (0-9), which lost 68-25 to Burlington Tuesday, at 6:40 p.m. Friday in
the Burlington Middle School gym.
Labette County beat Santa Fe Trail 61-41 and Sabetha downed Paola 51-44 in the other side of the bracket.
If Iola wins Friday night, the Fillies play the winner of the Paola-Santa Fe Trail game for fifth place. If it loses, the Fillies play for seventh place.
“Their height dictated our offense because we did not adjust,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies’ head coach. “When we didn’t try to force in inside against the zone and made passes, we got good looks. Also we didn’t rebound very well against them.”
Carlson said the Wildcats played a good zone defense and had a balanced offense with good inside and outside games. She said Hayden’s half-court defense frustrated us “because we didn’t make the adjustments.”
It didn’t help the Fillies’ effort when senior post player Kayla Callahan went to the Iola bench with two fouls just two minutes into the game. Seniors Kristin McGuffin and Carly Mulsow had baskets to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:40 left.
The Wildcats took over from there. Nicole Federico, 5-11, had a putback and a basket to start a 13-0 run that reached into the second quarter. A three-point field goal by Maggie Wilson made it 17-7 at the 5:26 mark of the period.
Iola trailed 28-7 at halftime.
Defensively, the Fillies held the Wildcats to eight points in the third quarter but only put in six of their own. Those came on threes by Kendra Taiclet and Toni Taylor to make it 35-13 after three quarters.
All six of Iola’s fourth quarter points were scored by Kelsey Larson. Hayden tossed in 12 more in the final eight minutes.
Iola shot 23 percent, 6 of 26, from the field and went 4 of 11 at the free-throw line. Hayden was 8 of 15 from the line.
Larson and Taiclet each had four rebounds. Larson led the Fillies with six points.
Wilson made four steals. Iola had 27 turnovers and most came trying to throw over and through the taller Wildcats.
Federico ended up with 19 points for Hayden. Jayde Reid added 14 points.
