Humboldt Lady Cubs take second at TRL championship

More than a few fans walked away astonishied after the Humboldt Lady Cubs took second at Thursday's Tri-Valley League Cross Country Championship.

NEODESHA — The Humboldt Lady Cub harriers wrapped up the regular season with a second-place finish at Thursday’s Tri-Valley League cross country meet in Neodesha. 

Freshman Aspen Wimsett, senior Tori Melendez, junior Jo Ellison and senior Mallory Sinclair led the pack. 

Wimsett took seventh in 24:53. Melendez crossed the finish 22 seconds after Wimsett for eighth place in 25:15. Ellison took 17th after clearing the course in 28:08. 

Sinclair was Humboldt’s last top 20 finisher after taking 19th in 29:01, which was just over a minute from 21st place Humboldt freshman Kara Culbertson. 

Senior Josey Ellis took 27th in 32:23; followed by sophomore Reagan Marple, who took 28th in 32:24, and sophomore Willow LaCrone, who took 30th in 33:28. 

Three Humboldt Cubs finished in the top 30 Tuesday during the Tri-Valley League meet in Neodesha. 

Humboldt junior Jack Works finished first among area male competitors and 18th overall after clearing the course in 22:16. Humboldt junior Emmitt Carson and Carter Collins finished 25th and 26th respectively. Carson cleared the course in 23:31 while Collins was just 2 seconds behind with a 23:23 run.

Men’s 5K: 18. Jack Works, HHS, 22:16; 25. Emmitt Carson, HHS, 23:21; 26. Carter Collins, HHS, 23:23.

Women’s 5K: 7. Aspen Wimsett, HHS, 24:53l 8. Tori Melendez, HHS, 25:15; 17. Jo Ellison, 28:08; 21. Kara Culbertson, HHS, 30:05; 27. Josey Ellis, HHS. 32:23; 28. Reagan Marple; HHS, 32:24; 30. Willow LaCrone, HHS, 33:28.

Junior high men’s 2-mile: 5. Deegan Megenity, HMS, 14:48; 12. Marcus Whitcomb, HMS, 16:53.
