High School Baseball: Iola Mustangs

The Iola High School baseball team was showered with accolades by online sports publication “Sports In Kansas” over the weekend.

The Mustangs earned multiple spots on the 4A-II All-State first team and honorable mention list led by junior 4A-II Pitcher of the Year Derek Bycroft and the 4A-II Coach of the Year Mark Percy.

The award is Bycroft’s second after earning the same Pitcher of the Year recognition from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches last month.

Bycroft was 8-0 with a 0.73 ERA, racking up 63 strikeouts in 47.2 innings.

The championship was the school’s first and the first for Percy since he took over the Iola program 14 years ago.

In addition to Bycroft and Percy, senior pitcher Isaac Vink, sophomore outfielder Calvin Delich and senior utility player Ethan Tavarez earned spots on the first team all-state team.

Sophomore first baseman Brady Wiggin and sophomore pitcher and infielder Cal Leonard earned honorable mention honors.

The Mustangs lose Vink and Tavarez to graduation but look to return everyone else for a run at another state title in 2019.

Humboldt

The Cubs had their share of all-state selection from the publication as well.

Junior Dagen Goodner was the lone Humboldt player to make either first or second team, earning 3A first team all-state honors as a designated hitter. Goodner was a force on the offensive end, leading the Cubs in batting average with .515, hits with 35 and RBIs with 35.

Senior third baseman Wyatt Seufert, sophomore pitcher and second baseman Cooper Jaro and sophomore outfielder Conor Haviland received honorable mention honors.

Marmaton Valley also earned some recognition as junior Caiden Elliot received honorable mention on the 2-1A all-state team.
