The Iola High School cross country squad traveled to compete in the Fort Scott Invitational Thursday, and coach Marv Smith saw several of his runners come away with medals.
The varsity boys team finished first overall in the meet, 30 points ahead of second-place finisher Labette County.
The Mustangs’ wide margin of victory came after five of its six runners placed within the top-10.
Braden Plumlee led the boys in the 5k race with a final time of 19:09, which was good enough for a fifth place overall.
The rest of the team wasn’t far behind, finishing sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth overall.
With only three runners, the girls team did not have enough participants to qualify for a team score, but the girls still finished strong individually.
Megan Klubek led the girls team with a time of 22:57 in the 5k race, which was good enough for an eighth-place finish.
Iola had three JV runners compete at the Fort Scott Invitational — two boys and one girl.
The JV meet at Fort Scott had never previously been a 5k, but that was changed prior to this season.
All three runners finished no worse than 32nd overall in their respective races.
