Jack Morrell is a sports junkie like most coaches. When he saw an email about a free trip giveaway to the 2011 ESPY Awards from Cox Communcations, he entered the contest online.
Last Wednesday, Morrell and his wife, Cathy, were walking the red carpet at the 19th annual ESPY Awards in Los Angeles.
“Man, it was awesome. A trip of a lifetime for me and Cathy enjoyed it too,” Morrel said. “At first, she wasn’t so keen on accepting the trip but then she looked it up and found out how many celebraties would be at the ESPYs and off we went.”
Morrell said the trip was all-expenses paid. They flew out and had time to do a little sightseeing before all the contest events. The first evening was a welcoming party with sports triva contests.
“I wasn’t smart enough to win any of those prizes,” Morrell laughed. “Cathy had her hair done.”
Morrell said they had a pre-ESPY luncheon then went back to get ready “to walk the red carpet.
“Of course, they had a separate walk way for us common folks but we were still pretty close to all the athletes, coaches and other celebraties. It was just a great time.
“We went into the Nokia Theatre and were in the nosebleed seats but what fun.”
After the awards show, the Morrells went to an after party.  Morrell said meeting ESPN sportscasters such as Tom Jackson was tremendous.
“Tom Jackson was so nice. We talked a lot about football,” Morrell said.
Morrell is a former coach for Iola Middle School. He has a combined 100 years of coaching experience in three sports — 31 in football, 32 in basketball and 37 in track.
