CHANUTE — The Iola A Indians swept a pair of games at Chanute Monday night, each in dramatic fashion by one run.
The Indians (6-2) won game one after Easton Weseloh put Iola ahead in the sixth on a two-run single for the 5-4 lead. In game two, Grady Dougherty singled to center in the fifth to plate the go-ahead winning run for the 7-6 victory.
Game one
One swing of the bat by Iola’s Weseloh made the difference against Chanute in the 5-4 opening win of the doubleheader.
Weseloh came through with two runners on base in the sixth inning when he singled to center field to take a 5-3 lead. Chanute cut the lead by one in the bottom of the sixth but Iola’s pitching was strong enough to hold on in the final innings.
Drake Weir took the win on the mound for the Indians, tossing 2.1 innings in relief and allowing two runs on three hits. Nick Bauer started the game and worked three innings, allowing two runs on two hits with four walks.
Gavin Jones earned the save on the hill and didn’t allow a run through the final 1.2 innings.
Iola took the lead in the top of the first when Blake Ellis scored on a passed ball for the early 1-0 lead. Kade Nilges then grounded to first base where he reached on an error while driving in another run to make it 2-0.
Chanute clawed back in the bottom of the first when Thompson grounded out to short to score a run and make it 2-1. In the next at bat, Alonzo doubled to center to knot the game at 2-2.
Ellis grounded out to third to score a run in the top of the third and take a 3-2 lead.
Chanute’s Baker grounded out to shortstop in the fifth and brought a run home to tie it at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Weseloh delivered with his two-run single to center that scored Dougherty and Weir for the 5-3 lead.
Anderson walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to bring home one more Chanute run but Jones closed out the game by recording the final five outs on the mound for Iola.
Weseloh knocked home a team-high two runs for the Indians while Jacob Harrington had a team-high two hits.
