FORT SCOTT — Iola High’s junior varsity boys basketball team picked up a hard-fought win Thursday.
The Mustangs, playing in a tournament hosted by Fort Scott, defeated Chanute 41-35.
The JV girls weren’t as fortunate, dropping a 33-28 decision to the Blue Comets.
“We played better than our first game against Girard,” JV boys coach Dan Berg said. “We blocked out more consistently and played better team defense overall.”
Travis Hermstein and Jesse Zimmerman shared high scoring honors for Iola with 10 points apiece. Fryendz Wallace chipped in with seven and Adam Peterson scored six.
Bryan Mueller scored four points, Kohl Endicott had two and Shane Walden one.
“The offense needs a lot of work,” Berg said. “We were quite sloppy in that part of the game, and we need to improve from the free throw line.”
Iola was 12 of 31 from the stripe.
In the girls’ contest, the Fillies were led by Mikaela Platt and Ashlie Shields with six points apiece. Shelby Reno scored five, Cassie Delich had four, Hannah Ingle three and McKayli Cleaver two.
The Mustang JV wraps up tournament play today with games against hosts Fort Scott and Frontenac.
