ALTAMONT — Iola High’s track season certainly got off to a whirlwind start Thursday at Labette County High School. The team did well individually, but the meet was interrupted by a tornado warning before it could be completed. Due to the storm warning, information was  available for only the top six places of each event.
The athletes were required to seek shelter for an extended period, according to coach Dana Daugharthy. Events that were not finished were the 4×400-meter relays for the junior varsity and varsity boys.
“It was a good first meet. The first meet is always a learning experience, especially for how young our team is,” Daugharthy said. “Several athletes provided a very good baseline for themselves to improve upon as the season progresses.”
For the varsity girls, Emery Driskel started the season off on a high note in multiple events. She finished second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 50.95 seconds. She placed second in the 100-meter high hurdles at 17.46 seconds and she finished fifth in the 200-meter dash  with a time of 29.12 seconds.
Olivia Taylor placed second in the 800-meter run at two minutes, 28 seconds, and fourth in the 3200-meter run at 13:32.
Cassie Delich took fifth in the high hurdles at 20.45 seconds. Jessica Oakley placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 84 feet, 7 inches.
Travis Hermstein was the only varsity boys athlete with available stats. He took third in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet. He narrowly missed clearing 10’6”, which would have matched both the first- and second-place finishers. Hermstein placed sixth in the 1600-meter run at 5:48.
The junior varsity boys tied for third in team standings.
Brice Aiello took first in the long jump at 18’6 1/2”. He took sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.64 seconds.
Nate Evans took second in the pole vault with a jump of 9 feet. He took fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.77 seconds.
Chase Regehr won the 800, finishing in 2:15.75. He placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.09 seconds.
Trea Williams threw the discus 94’9” for third.
Ethan Holloway took third in the high jump, clearing 5’2”.
Darius Greenawalt finished first and Jonathan Rodewald third in the triple jump at 34’5” and 90’9 1/2”, respectively.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Aiello, Rodewald, Evans and Nathan Sprague finished third in 49.45 seconds.
For the JV girls, Madison Carlin took third in the high jump at 4’2”.
The 4×100 relay team of Carley Cescon, Klair Vogel, Addy Prather and Jessica Oakley took second in 1:00.59.
The varsity squad travels to Parsons Friday. Field events start a 3:30 p.m. and running events at 4 o’clock.
