EUREKA — Humboldt junior Broc Ivy will make his second run at a state title after taking third in the 157 lbs. weight class at Saturday’s KSHSAA 3-1A Regional Wrestling Tournament.
After falling in the semifinals to eventual regional champion Caleb Slane (32-11), a Central Heights senior, Ivy worked his way up the consolation bracket until culminating the day with a 12-6 victory for third place.
Following a first-round bye, Ivy opened the tournament with a statement making 18-0 technical fall of Burden Central junior Isaiah Williams (12-13).
Ivy had a second-period pin of Jayhawk-Linn junior Kollyn Malinowski (11-14), which punched his ticket to the state tournament. With his previous opponents having middling records, Ivy proved he was more than just a step above average with a dominating 12-6 victory over 26-13 Caney Valley senior Haiden Evans.
Junior Emmitt Carson missed the state tournament by one match while competing in the 144 lbs. weight class. Carson (11-15) opened with a loss to eventual regional champion Logan Gray, a 28-15 Caney Valley sophomore. Carson broke into the consolation semifinals with a 6-4 win over Remington sophomore Asher Irving (13-18).
Carson’s season came to an end after falling to eventual regional bronze medalist Layne Goodison, a 24-15 Jayhawk-Linn sophomore, by 17-1 technical fall. Considering a severe knee injury sidelined Carson from the fall sports season, as well as offseason workouts, making the consolation semifinals is not a bad end to Carson’s year.
Ivy will join three Humboldt wrestlers at the state tournament in Hays Friday.
Senior Victoria Melendez (100 lbs., 22-14), sophomore Willow LaCrone (26-6) and senior Savannah Koch (22-15) qualified last weekend.
Ivy, LaCrone and Koch previously qualified for the state tournament. Ivy qualified as a freshman while LaCrone and Koch each qualified last year.
