YATES CENTER — An evenly fought first half turned in the visitors’ favor Friday, when Yates Center High’s offense hit a cold snap in the third period.
“We just had way too many turnovers,” Wildcat head coach Abbie Collins said.
Meanwhile, Caney Valley High’s Bethany Barlow was on fire. Barlow fired in 15 points in the third quarter alone as the Lady Bullpups turned a 29-21 halftime lead into a 53-33 margin by the end of the period.
“She (Barlow) did a great job of getting past us and driving to the hoop,” Collins said. “She also hit a couple of threes.”
Yates Center tried a valiant comeback in the fourth quarter, but came up on the short end of a 62-51 defeat.
The loss drops Yates Center to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in Tri-Valley League play.
“That was probably one of our best games of the season, at least in the first half,” Collins said. “Now, we just have to put four quarters together.”
Caney Valley led 12-8 after one quarter and by eight at the break. The Lady Bullpups outscored Yates Center 24-10 in the third quarter to assume full control.
The Wildcats managed to close the gap with an 18-9 run that spanned the fourth quarter.
Drew Spencer led Yates Center with 15 points, while Cherokee Shaffer added 12 rebounds. Emily Baker pulled in seven steals. Autumn Douglas also had nine points.
Barlow wound up with 27 points to lead Caney Valley. Kayla Clapp added 16.
Yates Center resumes play Tuesday at home against Cherryvale.
