Lady Cubs outlast Central Heights in overtime to snap two-game skid

HUMBOLDT — The ball rattled in and then out and — just to provide dramatic effect — sat on the rim for a couple juicy milliseconds before falling in for Humboldt junior Aricah McCall, sending her team to overtime where the Lady Cubs eventually prevailed over Central Heights, 41-36

Just seconds before the free throws, the Lady Cubs found themselves down two in a game where the less that could be said about the offense, the better. Humboldt had scored just two points in the third quarter and after leading by as much as nine, needed everything to go right with 6 seconds on the clock.

McCall hustled down the court and as time expired, the official called a foul on her layup in the lane to send her to the line where she sunk both free ones to force overtime.

“That’s what we talked about,” Humboldt coach Aubrey Jones said. “I told her she has the best chance out of anybody to go coast-to-coast so I told the team that the ball was going to go in her hands. She did a beautiful job of executing it.”

Central Heights took the first bucket in overtime but the Lady Cubs closed it out with an 8-0 run to clinch the win.

The Lady Cubs clung to their defense all game which kept them afloat in their cold spells and turnover fits.

“The defense kept us in it because we were struggling,” Jones said. “We hit a couple of shots to start and then we went as cold as you can possibly go. We were struggling to hit anything at that point. But they just kept driving at it and the bench did a good job of keeping us in the game. It was a complete team effort.”

With the win, the Humboldt girls move to 12-7 overall. The win snapped a two-game losing streak.

“I think I needed that win more than the kids did quite honestly,” Jones said. “That’s something we’ve talked about, getting refocused. The season is a long grind and I think they got a little weary but I think now they’re rejuvenated and ready to go.”

The Humboldt girls will wrap up the regular season on Monday when they host Cherryvale.
