LEON — The Humboldt Middle School Lady Cubs’ season came to a sudden end after falling to Cherryvale 28-15 in the opening round of the Tri-Valley League Middle School Basketball Tournament.

With one point in the first and final quarters of Monday’s opener, the Lady Cubs could not keep up with Cherryvale, who remained consistent throughout the evening while being ahead 14-9 by halftime and taking a 21-13 lead by the fourth quarter.

“We got off to a slow start and dug ourselves a hole that we just couldn’t get out of,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said. “Our defense kept us in the game until late in the third quarter. We just couldn’t convert on the offensive end to close the gap.”

Hadlee Allen ended the season leading the Lady Cubs in points and rebounds with a field goal, a 3-pointer and a free-throw to complement her five boards. Brooklyn Watson had five points and four rebounds.

Zoey Sanchez had a team-leading seven rebounds and three assists while posting three points. Quinn Miller had four steals while tying Allen for second in rebounds with five boards each.

“I’m really happy with the way our girls competed all year long,” Miller said. “We struggled at times, but our girls showed up with a great attitude and a willingness to learn every day.”
