The Humboldt Middle School Lady Cubs won two of three contests Monday while hosting the Neodesha Bluestreaks.
The C-Team opened with a 16-3 win followed by a 20-15 win by the B-Team.
The A-Team suffered a 23-12 loss against the Bluestreaks.
“Our C team played a great team game. They really moved the ball and got some easy shots and played great defense,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said.
“We did some really good things in the A game. The difference in the game was the third quarter.”
In the finale, the A-Team could not make up for lost ground after a 10-point third quarter by the Bluestreaks.
Quinn Miller had a team-leading 6 points, followed by Rhys Treiber with 4 points and Sydney Daniels with a bucket. Miller tied Hadlee Allen for the team lead in rebounds with four each. She also tied Allen in steals with four each.
“We didn’t rebound and they seemed to get to every loose ball,” Miller said. “We had some turnovers against their pressure, and they were able to get some separation.”
The B-Team set the stage for a sweep after an 11-point second quarter left Neodesha playing catchup from there.
Brooklyn Watson had 8 points followed by Azzy Miller with 6 points. Peyton Weilert had a three on a trio of free-throws. Zoey Hess had six rebounds, followed by Miller with five and Weilert with four boards.
“Our B team put together a really good second quarter and were able to get a comfortable lead going into the half,” Miller said. “We missed too many easy shots and turned it over against their press to let them back in the game. They did a great job defensively down the stretch to put it away.”
The C-Team relied on its defense to pick up the win while holding the Bluestreaks to a single score.
Aubree Trim, Brinley Grean and Azahlynn Wilkerson each had two buckets. Azzy Miller and Peyton Weilert had a bucket each.
Wilkerson posted eight rebounds for the team lead in boards, followed by Weilert with five rebounds and Trim with four boards.
Humboldt returns to the hardwood when they host another TVL rival Bluestem Thursday. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
