MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s girls had two problems Friday night: white-hot shooting from Southern Coffey County High’s Ashton Isch and ice-cold shooting by the Wildcats at the free throw line.
The resulting 55-34 Lady Titan win had Wildcat head coach Kent Houk wondering “what if?”
“We were with them through the first half,” Houk said. “We just couldn’t hit our free throws in the second half.
The Wildcats connected on only 6 of 21 free throws overall and 4 of 14 in the third quarter that saw SCC turn a 27-21 lead to 43-29 by the end of the third period. Southern Coffey County then ended the game with a 12-5 run to seal the victory.
Isch connected on two three-pointers to rack up a game-high 23 points for the Lady Titans. Jenna Witteman and Samantha Jacob added eight points each.
Maggie Meiwes led the way for Marmaton Valley with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Cheyanne Miller added eight points, 10 boards and two steals. Kailey Boyd also had two steals. Morgan Henry had three assists.
Houk pointed to the effort by several unsung players, such as Miller, Boyd, Jamee McEndree and Hollie Sparks.
“The girls really played hard,” he said.
Southern Coffey County resumes play Tuesday at Pleasanton. Marmaton Valley travels to Altoona-Midway Monday in a makeup contest before traveling to Chetopa on Tuesday.
