RICHMOND — A back-and-forth affair wasn’t decided until the final buzzer Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for Uniontown High’s girls, the buzzer sounded as a player from Central Heights drained a short runner to break a 37-37 deadlock. The basket, which came at the end of the first overtime session, gave the Vikings a 39-37 victory.
The loss drops Uniontown’s record to 10-7. The Eagles travel to Pleasanton Friday.
The Eagles fought back from a five-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the score at 33-33. Things were looking even better when Breanna Esslinger dropped in a three-pointer to open the overtime session.
But the Eagles went cold from there, scoring only one more point.
“The girls really battled in this one,” Eagle head coach Ken Holt said.
The teams were knotted at 8-8 after one period and the Vikings led 20-8 at the break and 26-25 after three periods.
Esslinger scored all 12 of her points from three-point range, hitting 4 of 7 attempts. Jacy Ermel added nine points and 11 rebounds. Abbie Smith had seven points and 11 boards. Hope Jurgensen had two steals. Smith had three assists.
The Eagles shot 32 percent, 11 of 34, from the field and hit 9 of 14 free throws. Central Heights shot 40 percent, 18 of 42, and was 3 of 14 from the line.
Katelin Horstick led Central Heights with 12 points.
