COLONY — A handful of costly mistakes, topped with visiting Uniontown High’s bruising ground game, gave Crest High’s Lancers their first loss of the 2014 season.
Uniontown churned out 479 rushing yards (unofficially) in rolling to a 56-22 romp, dropping the Lancers to 2-1.
The Eagles put three runners over the century mark in coasting to the win, even though Crest dominated in time of possession in the second half. At one point, the Lancers held the ball for nearly 10 minutes of the third quarter, yet still saw Uniontown extend its 22-point lead to 44-6 by early in the final quarter.
On two occasions, the Lancers came up one yard short on fourth-and-long situations, and a 12-play, 7-minute drive to open the second half came up empty when the Eagles’ Jacob Duffey stepped in front of a Rene Rodriguez halfback option pass for the easy interception.
Duffey then burst through the line on third-and-eight for 64-yard touchdown to extend Uniontown’s lead to 38-6. The Lancers lost a fumble to end their next drive, only to see Uniontown’s Cole Schafer break away on a 26-yard scoring run  to push its lead to 38.
There were some bright spots for the Lancers, who rushed (unofficially) for 375 yards.
Senior quarterback Austin Green accounted for 49 of Crest’s 67 yards on an extended second-quarter drive, including the last four on a keeper to put the Lancers on the board at the 4:23 mark of the second quarter. Problem was, Uniontown already led, 22-0.
Schafer’s touchdown with 25 seconds left in the half put the Eagles on top 28-6 at the break.
Lancer senior Kyler Bowen scored on a nine-yard run with 9:29 left in the game for the Lancers’ second score, cutting the deficit to 44-14.
Crest’s Evan Godderz capped the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run with 1:48 left in the game.
Green took a pounding for Crest, rushing 18 times for 118 yards. He also was 3 of 6 passing for 7 yards.
Rodriguez added 74 yards on 15 rushes. Brandon Brallier added 63 yards on 13 carries.
Uniontown’s three-headed monster of Tommy Joles, Schafer and Jacob Duffey, provided 131, 129 and 105 rushing yards, respectively. The Eagles narrowly missed getting a fourth runner above the century mark. Gavin Fry added 83 yards on six carries late in the game.
Crest travels to St. Paul next Friday.
