PLEASANTON —  Crest High’s Lancers weren’t able to defend their Kansas Class 1A Regional Tournament title Saturday.
Waverly High’s Bulldogs used a 16-7 first-quarter run to stake a lead that they would not let go of Saturday at Pleasanton High School. Despite a strong comeback by the Lancers, the Bulldogs captured a 63-56 win and the regional championship.
Good news for the Lancers is that both teams advance to Class 1A substate play this week. Waverly goes to the substate at Emporia while the Lancers go to Butler Community College in El Dorado.
“We put ourselves behind the eight-ball early and had to claw our way back,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest head coach. “I was pleased with our effort.
“This wasn’t a bad loss for us. It exposed a lot of areas we have been weak in. Now we have a week to make some improvements in those areas.”
Crest (18-4) plays Yates Center (13-10) at 6 p.m. Thursday at BCC. Yates Center, which is coached by former Crest assistant coach Jason Weilert, defeated St. Paul 57-39 Saturday in a Class 1A regional title game at Yates Center.
There was no report to the Register on the Yates Center game.
Also at El Dorado are Burr-ton (19-4) and Caldwell (15-8). The championship game is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Waverly led 32-23 at halftime Saturday. Crest outscored the Bulldogs 16-14 in the third but the teams matched point-for-point, 17, in the fourth quarter.
Waverly cashed in on 23 of 35 free throw attempts. The Bulldogs scored 15 of their 17 fourth-quarter points from the foul line. Crest went 8 of 15 at the line.
Kyle Hammond fired in 20 points to lead Crest. Bryan Newton added 17 points plus had 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Zach Stinnett chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Josh Teal fired in 16 points for the Bulldogs. Ian Steward had 15 points. Travis Sipe and Ethan Rice each had 11 points.
