It’s been a whirlwind beginning to the summer for recent Marmaton Valley graduate Brayden Lawson, who Iola Register readers picked as the May Allen County Area Male Athlete of the Month.
Lawson recently captured attention as one of the highest placers at the state track and field competition, where he took fifth in the javelin.
“I came in as the No. 2 ranked thrower in 1A. I was confident, but I injured myself a week before state,” Lawson said. “I was dealing with an injury to my arm. I went out and gave it all I had, and thankfully I medaled.”
Lawson, who originally accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Baker University, felt like he had some unfinished business when it came to throwing the javelin. Lawson recently accepted a spot on the Pittburg State University Track and Field Team to throw javelin.
“It’s a really good program, and a really nice college,” Lawson said. “It’s one of the top Division II schools in the country. It will be a lot of fun and they can help me become a better athlete.”
Despite picking track over football, Lawson was not done with the gridiron just yet. Last week, he participated in the eight-man football all-star game in Beloit. Strapping on the orange and black one last time, Lawson took the field with teammate Jaedon Granere and Coach Max Mickunas.
