Loaded tournament fields greet Iola squads

Iola High’s basketball teams will contend with loaded Burlington Invitational Tournament fields starting Tuesday.
Both the Mustangs and Fillies are at 4-4, yet both will be in the bottom half of their respective brackets.
Iola’s boys are the sixth seed and will take on third seed Labette County (5-2) at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Burlington Middle School gymnasium. From there, the Mustangs will play either second seed Paola (6-2) or seventh seed Santa Fe Trail (2-5) at 8:15 p.m. next Friday. The losers of the two first-round games also will square off at 8:15 Friday in the middle school.
Unbeaten Sabetha (8-0) is the top seed on the other side of the bracket and takes on 2-6 Rossville. Burlington (5-3) is seeded fourth and takes on fifth seed Chris Prep (11-7).
The final round matchups will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.
Meanwhile, the fifth-seeded Fillies take on fourth seed and host Burlington (7-1) at 6:40 p.m. in the high school gym. Unbeaten Santa Fe Trail (7-0) takes on eighth seed Labette County (3-4) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the other first-round matchup. The winners and losers of those games will square off at 6:40 p.m. next Friday.
Sabetha (7-1) is the second seed and takes on seventh seed Northfield (4-5), while third seed Paola (7-1) faces sixth seed Rossville (4-4) on the other side of the bracket.
The final round matchups begin at noon Jan. 25.
Iola’s C teams also are in tournament action Monday, traveling to Fort Scott. The Fillies C team will tip off against Prairie View at 5:30 p.m. in Fort Scott’s Buck Run Community Center. The Mustang C team will follow.
Both C teams will play twice again in Fort Scott Jan. 27. The teams take on host Fort Scott at the high school, starting at 3 p.m., before moving to the Buck Run center at 6 o’clock to play Chanute.

HUMBOLDT and Marmaton Valley’s boys and girls teams will be in Pleasanton starting Tuesday for its midseason tournament.
With only seven schools in attendance — one dropped out — officials decided on an unusual format.
The top four seeds on both sides will play in a round-robin championship bracket, while seeds 5, 6 and 7 will square off in a separate round-robin “runner up” bracket.
Humboldt’s boys (7-1) are the top seed and will take on Central Heights at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Uniontown at 7 p.m. Thursday and Jayhawk-Linn at 7 p.m. next Friday.
Marmaton Valley’s boys (0-8) are in the runner-up bracket and will take on Altoona-Midway (0-7) at 4 p.m. next Thursday and Pleasanton (1-7) at 4 p.m. next Friday.
Both Humboldt and Marmaton Valley girls teams are on the runner-up bracket as well on their side. The Lady Cubs (2-6) will play Altoona-Midway (0-7) at 4 p.m. Tuesday. They return to action next Friday at 4 p.m. to take on Marmaton Valley. The Wildcats (1-7) will take on Altoona-Midway at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday.

CREST HIGH’S Lancers and Lady Lancers will venture to Liberal, Mo., starting Monday to take part in a loaded Tony Dubray Classic field, featuring some of the strongest schools in southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri.
Crest’s boys are the sixth seed and will take on third-seeded Galena at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Liberal High School gymnasium. The winner will face either host Liberal, the second seed, or seventh seed Golden city at 8:30 p.m. next Thursday. The first-round loser will take on the loser of the Liberal-Golden matchup at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Top seed Pittsburg-Colgan St. Mary’s will face eighth seed Thomas Jefferson, while fourth seed Northeast-Arma faces fifth seed Bronaugh, Mo. The winners and losers of those matchups will square off in the semifinals.
Crest’s Lady Lancers have the eighth seed and will take on top seed Galena at 4 p.m. Tuesday
The consolation finals will be Friday evening. The third-place and championship games will be Saturday.
