March Madness not just basketball

March Madness. Those two words conjure up images from the annual NCAA men’s basketball tournament and all that goes with it.
I have my own madness in March. Sure, I have some of the games on when I’m at home. But I’m not glued to the television. Not a basketball junkie. I’m one of those football junkies so fall is the time I like to watch as many games — doesn’t matter what level or who is playing necessarily — as long as it’s football.
Most people figure since high school basketball, and now wrestling for Iola High, have concluded, I have down time. Not really. My letters to coaches for spring sports went out in late February. Now I have been sorting through the returned questionnaires with all the information.
In a week, all that information turns into stories for the Register’s annual Prep Spring Sports Preview special section. That means I’m writing and putting things together on the computer right now.
Plus there’s plenty of softball and baseball already under way — Allen County Community College’s teams are 16 to 22 games into their seasons.
Both the Red Devil softball and baseball teams are at home Saturday. The Red Devil softball team plays at home today then is on the road Sunday. The ACCC baseball team has another home doubleheader on Sunday.
Iola High’s tennis team has had two quadrangular meets this week alone.
Next week is spring break for the area schools then come March 28, the madness is ratcheted up a bit. Spring sports for area high schools and junior highs hit the on button and it’s full bore until May.
I’m not complaining. I just hope this spring will be less wet than last year. One great part of this job is spring when a lot of activities are in the afternoon and I get to get out of the office on nice days.

HAD THE K-STATE men’s game on Thursday night. Part of the March Madness this year with the NCAA tournament is figuring out which station your team’s game will be on. K-State’s game was on TRU TV which for Iola cable customers that’s channel 64.
Tonight’s Kansas men’s game is on TBS, which is channel 29 on the Iola cable system, at 5:50 (CDT). Then there are games on CBS, which is channel 7 for Iola cable customers and on TNT (channel 30).
K-State plays Wisconsin on Saturday some time. Not sure of the time yet. It wasn’t on the schedule I saw late Thursday night. Kansas’ next game — you see I’m  sure the Jayhawks will win tonight —  will be Sunday against the winner of UNLV and Illinois.
