CHEROKEE — Marmaton Valley High’s boys and girls had different results in their seventh-place games Saturday at the 2010 Southeast High Lancer Classic.
The Wildcat boys reversed a 17-16 first-quarter Frontenac High lead with a 14-7 run in the second quarter. The Cats went on to beat the Raiders 63-47 for seventh place.
After taking a 30-24 halftime lead, Marmaton Valley outscored Frontenac 16-8 in the third quarter. The Wildcats kept the heat on with a 17-15 scoring edge in the fourth period.
Zack Louk fired in 14 points, made six steals and had three assists to lead the Wildcats. Kurtis LaRue added 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Tanner Lewis and Dalton Houk each chipped in with 11 points. Cole Becker dished out four assists. Marmaton Valley went 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.
Marmaton Valley’s Ethan Ericson was named to the all-tournament team.
Buster Reddick finished with 17 points for the Raiders. The Raiders hit 8 of 15 free throw attempts.
The Wildcat girls played tough but couldn’t solve the Southeast High zone defense. The Lady Lancers netted a 41-34 win and seventh place in their own tournament.
MVHS girls’ head coach Kent Houk said the Wildcats scored 10 points in the first quarter against the man-to-man defense.
“Southeast switched to a zone in the second quarter and we couldn’t get the shots we needed,” Houk said.
The Lady Lancers increased their lead to 20-14 by halftime. Each team scored 11 points in the third then Southeast finished with a 10-9 edge.
Maggie Meiwes fired in 10 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Wildcats. Morgan Henry had eight rebounds. Alysha Westhoff handed out five assists and Jamee McEndree made three steals.
Southeast got 12 points from Mandy McGuire and 11 from Chaney Fox.
Marmaton Valley downed 5 of 16 free throw attempts to Southeast’s 11 of 26.
The Marmaton Valley teams host Oswego Tuesday.
