The Iola American Legion Post 15 Indians 15U hope to quickly bounce back from Monday’s 8-1, 11-6 sweep by the Midwest Elite.

The Indians found themselves on the wrong end of a five-inning no-hitter, scoring their only run of the opener in the fifth inning, when shortstop Milo Franklin reached home on an errant pitch.

Starter Lane Lord took the loss. He tied Franklin, who came on in relief in the third inning, for the team lead in strikeouts with three each.

Iola showed a bit more fight in the finale, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after a Franklin chopper forced an infield error and in the process plated Lord, now in the outfield, and starting pitcher Max Disbrow. That was as close to victory as the Indians would get Monday as the Midwest Elite scored eight unanswered runs to take control by the end of the third inning.

Iola chipped away at the Elite’s lead in the fourth inning, when Franklin reached home for the second time that evening on a passed ball. A two RBI double by third baseman Ty Wrestler in the fourth inning, then a the fifth Wrestler hard chopper forced another infield error and plated Franklin, pulling Iola within three runs but that was all of the offense Iola could muster as the Midwest Elite added two more runs in the fifth for an 11-6 win.

Franklin and Wrestler ended the finale tied for the team lead in RBIs with two each. Franklin also had a team-leading two hits, followed by Wrestler with one. Starter Max Disbrow, reliever Andrew Donovan and reliever Will Disbrow tied for the team lead with one strikeout each.

With the loss, the Indians fall to 2-11. They hope to inch closer to a .500 record Wednesday when they head on the road for a rescheduled game against Fort Scott, then host El Dorado Monday. First pitches for both doubleheaders are at 6 p.m.
