CHANUTE – Iola High’s Mustang wrestlers knew there were three ranked wrestlers among the two Southeast Kansas League teams they were facing Thursday. The Mustangs went 1-2 against those ranked opponents.
Chanute High’s Blue Comets, ranked No. 8 as a team in Kansas Class 4A, hosted the SEK double dual. Iola pushed its SEK dual mark to 3-2 with a 45-24 win over Labette County.
Then the Mustangs got overwhelmed by the Comets, 55-18. Iola won just two of the contested matches and one by forfeit against Chanute.
The big upset came in the final match between the Mustangs and the LCHS Grizzlies. Iola was comfortably in the lead for the league win but the big match was on tap.
Iola freshman Trey Colborn challenged sixth-ranked Spencer Gatewood in the 285-pound match. Colborn trailed Gatewood 7-1 after one period.
Colborn turned Gatewood and pinned him 29 seconds into the second period. Colborn had lost to Gatewood in December at the Caney Valley High tournament.
The other two individually ranked wrestlers are Comets.
Fourth-ranked Jared Fiscus pinned Iola’s Brent Clark in 2 minutes, 51 seconds in their 138-pound match. Clark had racked up a technical fall, 15-0 decision, over Labette County’s Mitch Kelly earlier. He is now 2-4 in SEK action.
Iola’s Devin Culler improved to 4-0 in 160–pound competition with a pin of Labette County’s Dalton Wiley in 2:38. Culler took on the top-ranked 160-pounder in Class 4A – Chanute senior Sam Son.
Culler did not get pinned but did suffer his first SEK loss at 160. Son posted a 25-10 technical fall over Culler.
Jacob Rhoads went 2-0 in league matches Thursday for the Mustangs. He pinned Lane Britton of Labette County, 2:46, and Chanute’s Dallas Joyce, 2:30, at the 145-pound weight. Rhoads is 4-2 in league competition.
Cody Conner won on the mat in SEK action for the first time with a pin of Labette County’s Trent Walker at 132. Conner picked up a forfeit win at that weight against Chanute and is 3-3 in league action.
Chase Roettgen posted a major decision, 9-1, over Corey Graham of Labette County to push his league mark to 5-0 at 220 pounds. Roettgen lost a heartbreaker, 8-7, to Chanute’s Cody Howell.
Tristan Sigfusson and Bryce Misenhelter each won by forfeit at 120 and 182, respectively, against Labette County. They both lost by pins against Chanute.
After being pinned by Lane Rosenberg of Labette County, Iola’s Kaleb Mock was able to post his first SEK win of the season. In the 126-pound match with Chanute, Mock pinned Lane Umbarger.
Colborn wasn’t able to keep the momentum going after his big win over Gatewood. Chanute’s William Divine beat Colborn 12-6 in the 285-pound match.
Iola is 3-3 in SEK dual action. The Mustangs won’t have any more SEK matches until Feb. 9. Iola will host Coffeyville and Independence to finish up league action.
The Mustang varsity wrestlers are idle until the Jan. 21 Eureka High Invitational.
Iola’s junior varsity wrestlers are at today’s Labette County High JV Invitational.
