Mustangs have rough time at Silver Lake

SILVER LAKE — Marcus Sullivan was the lone Iola High wrestler to break into the medals at Saturday’s Silver Lake High Invitational tournament.
Sullivan was third in the 160-pound varsity division. The Silver Lake Invitational had junior varsity and varsity divisions.
“It was a rough day for most of our guys,” said Ron Schomaker, IHS head coach. “We saw some really stiff competition as we knew we would.”
Sullivan opened the tournament with an 11-0 win over Michael Dunlap of Prairie View then edged Taylor Anderson of Salina South 10-9 in the second round.
Colton Easterberg defeated Sullivan 9-3 in the semifinals.  Sullivan made it to the third-place match by pinning Byron Hadfield of Leavenworth.
Sullivan faced Anderson of Salina South again for third. Sullivan pinned Anderson to take the bronze medal.
Chris Lynn finished sixth in the 285-pound class. He lost to Cale Karigan of Paola in the fifth-place match.
Lynn earned a first-round bye then pinned A.J. Brown of Seaman High School. In the semifinals he was pinned by Cody Peterson of Chase County. Lynn lost 5-2 in the consolation bracket to Tyler Ewy sending him to the fifth-place match.
At 130, Brent Clark was pinned by Mason Hurla of St. Marys and then by Mark Smith of Rossville. Lee Berg was pinned by Drake Pino of Silver Lake and Zach Pollom of St. James Academy in the 135-pound class.
In the 140-pound class, Joe Myrick was pinned by Kurt Waver of Paola and Tyler Trahoon of Emporia. Devin Culler lost to Rory Haug of St. James 22-3 in the first round of the 152-pound division. He beat Chris Edwards of Paola 8-6 then was pinned by Jason Siebel of Salina South.
Iola’s 171-pound wrestler, Drew Shepherd lost 4-3 to Brady Munsch of Salina South then was pinned by Chad Turney of Louisburg. Stephen McDonald was pinned by  David Bleakley of St. Marys then by Logan Anderson of Chase County.
“We’ve got two double-duals this week. Hopefully, we can fix some of our problems and do well during the remaining few competitions that we have,” Schomaker said.
Iola travels to Pittsburg Tuesday to take on Pittsburg and Fort Scott in Southeast Kansas League action. The Mustangs host Coffeyville and Independence in SEK matches Thursday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
In the junior varsity division Saturday:
125 pounds — Zeph Larney, lost 16-0 to Jacob Schroeder, Silver Lake; was pinned by Dylan Stewart, Osawatomie.
130 pounds — Jason Tidd was pinned by Brett Thomas of Wabunsee and Dalton Massek, Silver Lake.
152 pounds — Zack Vaughn lost 10-1 to Dalton Morgan, Silver Lake; pinned Justin King, Seaman; was pinned by Bigus, Paola.
Justin Baker was pinned by Shane Wilson, Silver Lake, and King, Seaman.
160 pounds — Zach Crawford was pinned by Bryce Whelehell, Salina South, beat David Higgins, Osawatomie, 7-3, and lost 5-3 to Thornwell, Seaman.
Chase Roettgen was pinned by Gage Krebs, Salina South; lost 14-4 to Jacob Garrer, St. Marys.
171 pounds — Denton Christian lost 11-3 to Collucci, Salina South; pinned Sanchez, St. Marys; lost 6-3 to Spring Rossville.
