A losing streak dating back nearly two years came to an end after the Iola Middle School eighth-graders defeated Prairie View 14-5 Monday night.

The Mustangs had a 6-1 lead heading into halftime thanks to a pair of free throws by Cora Boren, who went on to score a team-leading 6, and a bucket by Leanna Flory, who ended the evening second in scoring with 4 points, followed by Nebula Burrow and Hilary Gean with 2 points each.

“It was awesome. They work so hard every day in practice and we’re just happy to get them one,” Iola coach Lake Johnson said. “We put in a game plan we thought would work well against Prairie View and they executed it perfectly. They were so excited in the locker room. Hopefully we can bring that into some games the rest of the week and get another win.”

The seventh-grade Mustangs also celebrated Monday,  improving their record to 8-1 after their 41-10 victory over the Buffalos.

Abby Boeken lifted the Mustangs early on with 10 of her team-leading 20 points in the first quarter and it was all downhill from there.

Calyleigh Rutherford was second in team scoring with 9 points, followed by Macie Kimball with 4 points, then Elliot Sigg and Jaylie Herrmann with 3 points each.

Although third in scoring in the seventh-grade game, Kimball played a big role in securing the sweep by scoring all of the junior varsity team’s points during her 8-point performance in the 8-3 win.

Following Tuesday’s game at Anderson County, the Mustangs remain on the road Thursday for a game against Osawatomie.
