CHEROKEE — Marmaton Valley High’s boys were able to figure out their defensive flaws as their game progressed Tuesday.
But the Wildcats were unable to overcome their other shortcoming — turnovers. Marmaton Valley turned the ball over 20 times, preventing any hopes for a comeback in a 49-39 loss to Riverton High.
In girls action, Marmaton Valley played its second game against St. Paul in a week, and with much the same result, a 54-21 loss.
The defeat comes in the first round of the Southeast Lancer Classic.
Marmaton Valley’s boys will face tournament host Southeast of Cherokee High at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal game.
“They just got up and down the floor quicker than we did, and again turnovers were a big factor,” Wildcat head coach Denny Lasley said. “You’re not going to win with that many turnovers.”
Riverton led 16-12, thanks to defensive breakdowns by the Wildcats, Lasley said.
And while Marmaton Valley tightened its defense from there — Riverton scored a combined 22 points in the second and third periods — the Wildcat offense went cold. The Rams led 24-17 at the break and 38-26 by the end of the third period.
Ethan Ericson scored a game-high 17 points with seven rebounds for Marmaton Valley. Kurtis LaRue added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Dalton Houk dished out three assists.
Preston Combs scored 15 and Logan North 11 for Riverton.
IN THE girls’ contest, St. Paul leapt to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
“They played a good, half-court man-to-man defense,” Wildcat head coach Kent Houk said, “and their transition game is very good.
“We played better defense tonight and we rebounded better,” he continued. “But we committed way too many turnovers.”
Maggie Meiwes scored nine points, followed by Kailey Boyd with five, Morgan Henry with two and Tabitha Ford and Kacie Shadden with two apiece.
No other statistics from the girls’ game were available. The girls will play Baxter Springs at 4 p.m. Thursday.
