Before the season started, Marmaton Valley head coach Justin Hurley said he wanted to see his team fully buy into the football program.
On Friday night, it appeared as if Hurley’s wish started to come true.
Marmaton Valley defeated Chetopa High 46-20 in Chetopa on Friday night.
The Wildcats (1-0) won through its ground-and-pound style of play, which proved effective in wearing down the Hornets (0-1) late in the contest.
Out of its 402 total yards on offense, Marmaton Valley gained 364 through its rushing attack, which was led by its mobile quarterback Keagan Boyd.
The senior ran for a team-high 159 yards on 13 attempts while also scoring two touchdowns. He attempted just two passes all game and completed one for 38 yards.
Austin Deer, the Wildcats senior running back, complemented Boyd’s running game with 136 yards of his own on 12 attempts.
Deer finished the game with a game-high three scores, all of which came on the ground.
