Two second half goals by sophomore Welile Mweli were not enough to pull the Allen Red Devils back into contention during Saturday’s game against Johnson County Community College. The Red Devils lost 4-2.
Mweli reached the back of the net on a pair of goals just minutes apart, but they were too little, too late. The Red Devils were already trailing 3-0 at that point in the Jayhawk Conference showdown.
“There were many positives we can take away from this game, but obviously we didn’t get the victory,” said Temesgn Tezera, Allen assistant coach, said. “In soccer, sometimes the result isn’t everything. If you saw the scoreline, you would think it was a blowout, but it wasn’t. It was anything but that. We went down 3-0, and our boys fought back. It shows we have a lot of character.”
Mweli scored the first time at the 56:35 mark of the second half from an assist from sophomore Jeohvah Djimtotinine. His second goal, off an assist from sophomore midfielder Saviola Blake, pulled Allen within a goal.
But Johnson County Community College pulled away with a goal from freshman midfielder Sergion Hernandez Marquez at the 60-minute mark from an assist from goalkeeper Daniel Wozniek.
“Today’s game showed we have something to fight for,” Tezera said. “Our boys stuck together as a team. It’s something we can build off of for the rest of the season.”
With the loss, the Red Devils’ losing streak extends to five games. Allen (3-5-2, 0-4-1) heads on the road for a game against Southeast Community College Wednesday, then jumps back into Jayhawk Conference play Saturday when they host Kansas City Kansas Community College (3-5-2, 3-1-1). Kickoff for Saturday’s game is 4 p.m.
