BURLINGTON — Iola Middle School’s seventh-graders took home third place in the Burlington Invitational Saturday.
The seventh-graders started off on a tough note, falling 36-6 to host Burlington, but rebounded nicely to thump Eureka, 22-8.
Iola’s eighth-graders came up just short of both of their games.
They dropped a 31-25 decision to Burlington and a 30-27 setback to Eureka in the third-place game.
The squads return to action this afternoon at home against Royster Middle School of Chanute.
The eighth-graders fared well against a taller Burlington team, head coach Marty Taylor said.
Burlington took advantage of an 8-3 spurt in the second quarter to lead 16-12 at halftime. The score was in the Bobcats’ favor, 22-28, after three periods.
“The girls played well against Burlington,” Taylor said. “We saw the floor well and defended the basket.”
Colbi Riley led the way with 11 points. Madison Carlin followed with eight. Katie Bauer and Carly Cescon each scored two. Chloe Wilson and Karly McGuffin scored one each.
“We had a little bit of a letdown against Eureka, but the girls played hard and had a chance to win it at the end.”
Eureka outscored Iola 9-7 in the second quarter to lead 15-13 at the break.
McGuffin and Carlin each scored eight for the Ponies. Riley followed with seven. Katie Bauer and Scout Rush added three and one point, respectively.
Piper Moore scored three of Iola’s six points against Burlington. Madisyn Holloway added two and Kendra Sprague one.
The Ponies led 10-6 against Eureka in the third-place game and took control with an 8-0 spurt spanning the third quarter.
“We didn’t respond very well to Burlington’s pressure, but the girls regrouped and came out and played hard against Eureka,” Taylor said.
Mia Aronson led Iola with six points in the win. Sprague and Holloway followed with each. Moore had two, as did Charvelle Peterson and Savannah Puckett.
