Compelling questions … and maybe a few actual answers

So long, Jimmie?

While no one should’ve expected Jimmie Johnson to maintain his amazing career pace deep into his 40s, this ongoing slowdown is starting to look like a possible shutdown. It happens to all of them eventually. Jimmie hasn’t led a lap all season. Not one. This didn’t just happen. In the last 19 races of 2017, he led in just two of them, so it’s twice in his past 30 starts. That sounds like more than a mere “slump.”

How’d Hershel do?

The good news: 90-year-old Hershel McGriff finished 18th in a 100-lap K&N West race last weekend in Tucson, Ariz. Yes, there were only 18 entries, but let’s overlook that. He finished 94 of the 100 laps. Best of all, after all these years, we learned that Hershel is adept at the slide trombone. If you haven’t seen video of him playing the pre-race national anthem, go find it. Truly amazing.
