GARDEN CITY — The 18th hole of Buffalo Dunes Golf Club played havoc with the game of Allen County Community College’s golfers over the weekend.
The Red Devil golf team competed in the first Jayhawk Conference designated tournament of 2011-2012 in Garden City.
“We played fairly well the first day except for the 18th hole. All five players wee in good position in the fairway off the tee but we had three bogeys and two double bogeys on the hole,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC golf coach. “That placed us in seventh instead of a probable fifth-place finish.”
Hayes said the Red Devils did not play as well Sunday. He said only Josh Stanley improved his score. Stanley shot 82 on Saturday and 81 on Sunday for 163 total and finished 23rd.
Clinton Moore carded a first-round score of 78 but had an 83 on the second day. His 161 placed him 17th overall.
Jacob Weber tied or 34th with a 170 (84-86) and Casey Bettis had a 173 (82-91) for 36th. Chad Schmidt shot a 179 (87-92)  finishing tied for 41st.
As a team, Allen County ended up eighth in the first of six designated — three in the fall and three in the spring — conference tournaments. Dodge City edged Johnson County by six strokes — 602 to 608 — for first place.
Alex Tong of Dodge City won with a 144. Loran Richmeier of Dodge City and Mario Funcic of Johnson County tied for second with 149s.
“We must become more consistent,” Hayes said of the Red Devils.
Allen County is playing in the Ottawa University Fall Invitational next Monday and Tuesday. The tournament is at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence.
