DODGE CITY — The Allen Community College women’s basketball team certainly wanted to begin 2017 better than they ended 2016.
The Red Devils lost five-straight games before the Christmas break, so Friday’s matchup of teams with 3-6 Jayhawk Conference records was pivotal for the Red Devils as they traveled to Dodge City. The Red Devils were able to escape with a 64-55 win.
Allen brought the intensity early with a pair of new faces in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s tilt.
Kamri Summons got the start at point guard for coach Todd Buchanan’s squad and sharp-shooter Kendra Houston joined Tamera Shaver as the wings for the Red Devils.
With Summons, Shaver and Houston, Allen is able to pressure the ball with three of their quickest players on the floor and they can counteract pressure with those three being their top ball-handling guards.
Allen was able to control the game in the first half and they shot out to a 28-14 halftime advantage after holding Dodge City to just 17 percent shooting from the floor in the opening two quarters of play.
Dodge City didn’t give up on its home court and made a late run by outscoring the Red Devils 24-17 in the fourth quarter, but Allen’s talented forwards proved too much to handle.
Both Akia Andrews and Damonica Franklin posted double-doubles in the game.
Franklin had 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Andrews had 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Summons had 10 points while forward Presley Stephens made her season debut with eight points off the bench in 13 minutes.

DCCC MEN 88, ACC 82
The Allen men were unable to find the same success on the road that the women enjoyed.
The Red Devils fell behind 36-30 at halftime and were unable to climb out of that hole in the second half as they fell 88-82.
Sophomore DaRon Mims led the Red Devils in scoring with 28 points off of the bench in 27 minutes.
E.J. Garnes flirted with a triple-double and finished with seven points, nine rebounds and nine assists, but also had eight turnovers against the Dodge City defense.
Quentin Blaue scored 17 points while hitting five three pointers.
Former Marquette and Iowa State commitment Nick Noskowiak led Dodge City with 16 points.
