Red Devils come up short

Allen County Community College’s Red Devils had an opportunity to avenge a conference loss to Fort Scott Community College’s Greyhounds.

The Red Devils took on the Greyhounds in the final match of the day in the Allen County Invitational Saturday. Unfortunately, the Greyhounds served better than the Red Devils.

Allen County rebounded from a first set loss to win 25-15 in the second set. In the tournament, the teams played best 2-of-3 matches going to 15 points in set three.

The Red Devils had an 8-7 lead when the teams switched sides on the court. After that, it was the Greyhounds’ set. Fort Scott served for two points to take the lead.

Allen County got the serve back but did not score with control of the volleyball. Fort Scott used the strength of their top hitter, Paula Okrutna, who is from Pila, Poland,  to dominate the net. The Hounds served three straight.

Jordyne Seichepine put down a kill to give the service back to Allen County. But Okrutna delivered the decisive shot at the net. Fort Scott won the match 25-22, 15-25, 15-10.

Allen County went 1-2 on the day in round-robin matches. Neosho County beat ACCC 25-13, 25-23. Allen County downed Friends University’s junior varsity 25-22, 22-25, 15-12.

Fort Scott won the team title. It beat Friends’ JV 25-22, 25-15 and pulled out a 25-18, 25-21 win over Neosho County. Neosho County beat Friends’ JV 25-12, 20-25, 15-8.

“We saw where improvements have come from and areas we will continue to focus on,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach. “Reflecting on the weekend, we feel we are on a better path.

“We are preparing for the matches that count in the end.”

Alli Jenicke had 14 of her total 27 kills for the day against Friends’ JV. Haley Mertens had 10 of her 15 kills in the Friends match. Seichepine had 18 kills, one solo block and three assisted blocks at the net.

Makhala Giardina had a solo block and 11 kills for the three matches. Randi Billings had nine kills and three assisted blocks. Jacqui Ortiz had six kills on the day. Jenicke had a solo block and an assisted block as did Autumn Douglas.

Allen County only had four ace serves in the three matches.

Ortiz was credited with 41 set assists. Sabrina Stanley had 20 assists and Alisha Keith had 16 assists.

Nicole Reed came up with 46 defensive digs. Mertens had 33 digs and Jenicke had 30 digs. Ortiz made 20 digs and Stanley had 17.
