Red Devils stay undefeated in Iowa

The Allen Red Devils improved their record to 4-0 after picking up a pair of wins at the Reveir Classic while over the weekend while taking on Iowa Western Community College and Ellsworth Community College.

The Allen Red Devils remain undefeated after picking up a pair of close wins while participating in the Reiver Classic over the weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

After opening the showcase with a 46-41 victory over Ellsworth Community College Friday, the Red Devils ended the weekend with a 47-45 victory over Iowa Western Community College.

A strong second and third quarter set the Red Devils apart from Ellsworth during Friday’s 46-41 victory. Freshman forward Emma Varennes and sophomore forward Nikki Gear came off the bench to tie for the team lead in scoring with 9 points each while freshmen guard Jennyfer Gros had eight points. 

Hot off a strong performance under the basket a few days earlier against Tabor College, freshman forward Joniya Lewis had another strong outing Friday with six rebounds, followed by sophomore center Yalaine Luthi with four rebounds. Gros and sophomore guard Juana Rojas had three each. Gros also had a team-leading three steals.

After a slow start Saturday against Iowa Western, the Red Devils got their feet underneath them in the second half for their fourth victory of the season. Gros had a breakout performance on offense, netting a team-leading 15 points while also tying sophomore guard Tawhirikura Doyle for the team lead in steals with two each.

Doyle tied Luthi for the team lead in rebounds with five each. Doyle was second in scoring with 9 points while Lewis was third with 8 points. Freshman forward Jalynn Weakley came off the bench for 6 points. Doyle also tied Rojas for the team lead in assists with two each.

Following this weekend’s action, the Red Devils remain undefeated at 4-0. They open a three-game home stand with Friday’s game against Haskell College at 5 p.m., then host McPherson College at 5 p.m. Saturday and North Central College at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
