MIAMI, Okla. — Allen Community College’s volleyball season ended with a thud Monday, their head coach said.
The Red Devils, eliminated last week from a spot in the Region VI playoffs, wrapped up the 2012 campaign with a straight-set loss to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, 25-16, 25-17, 25-8.
The loss puts Allen’s final record at 13-19.
“You have some that want it and some that don’t care. The ones that don’t care — they won tonight,” a frustrated Jessica Peters said following the match. “I had five sophomores who wanted it, because this was going to be the last night they played for the name on the front of the jersey. This should have been, without a doubt, a lights-out match, no questions asked, an opportunity to leave everything out there.
“But we failed to compete.”
Individual statistics were unavailable from the match.
Peters credited NEO for the team’s effort.
The Lady Norse “played great,” Peters said. “Their defense picked up everything, and their outside hitters were lights out putting balls away on our 10-foot line. It shouldn’t have been hard for us to play tonight. We had an opportunity to end our season with a win and play one last time together.
“We find ourselves now walking away from tonight with an end to the season, one of which I had not envisioned, but one I must accept.”
The Red Devils get a little break before focus shifts to off-season training, Peters said.
“Our expectations of these athletes don’t disappear after tonight,” she said. “We just start working for different goals, on and off the court.”
Peters said Allen players will be more visible to the public now that the season has concluded by working with the Iola Recreation Department and along side the Allen County Aces club team.
“Red Devil volleyball has always been about more than just what happens on a court,” Peters said. “Although a 13-19 record doesn’t do us justice, we do have honors to be proud of and a positive reputation to uphold.”
Hayley Mertens capped her sterling ACC career with eight kills, seven digs, an asisted block and 8.5 points. Sidney Keith added four kills. Jacki Ortiz had 10 set assists and 10 digs.
